Speyer

I spent Memorial Day in Speyer with my co-worker AJ and his daughter Moriah and their grandpa Tad. It's only about an hour away. It was a cool city and one that I think I'll spend more time in, in the future. There were eis cafes galore!
A view of the cathedral from the balcony of the old city entrance tower.
Another view from the tower in the opposite direction... On the left, a Lutheran church and on the right a Catholic church.
A view of the tower.

Speyer used to have a large Jewish population. In the 1500s Jewish baths were built. They were the best ones north of the Alps and were used as an example for other baths to be built in the area. The Jewish population eventually died out - well before WWII. After WWII the small remanent was even smaller. Just recently, the Jewish population has begun to grow again.
