As promised, here are a few pictures of the inside of our place.
The year above our doorway is 1927. It's cool to live in such an old place with character. One of those "character" pieces is... there isn't a square corner or a straight edge in our house. It's really funny to see the floor boards/molding - nothing is square. You could put a marble on the floor, and it would constantly roll. Gotta love vintage character!
Our house is laid out really well. When you enter, you walk into the middle of it. In front of the entrance is our kitchen and bathroom. To the right is our living room and my bedroom. And to the left is our dining room and Heather's bedroom. It's nice to have 2 living areas and have our rooms on different sides of the house for when we have different wake up/sleeping schedules. It's also nice to have room for entertaining. We're looking forward to having students over for Bible studies, movie and game nights and dinner. This fall, Heather and I are going to host a weekly book club group with the other Cadence women in our community.
So, there are 2 things about Germans and renting:
1. Germans don't move nearly as often as Americans do, when they rent, the rent for longer terms.
2. Therefore, they pick out more of the furnishings to their rentals than the average American renter... to include light fixtures and kitchens. Some rentals have all the hook ups for a kitchen - but you buy and install your own counters, cupboards, sink, oven, etc. Many rentals also require renters to buy and install their own light fixtures.
Thankfully, our kitchen came fully equipped; we just needed to do our own lights.
^ Our dining room in the foreground, and guest room/future office in the background. We found a cute bakers rack to use as a coffee bar. It was really cool to find furniture for this room. There's an online classifieds that we search, daily : ). We found the table, bakers rack and day bed from 3 different sellers, all for good deals and they all match nicely! The big window at the end of the room is closed now, but it looks out onto a shared backyard with really high, mature trees that are pretty. We've got a plumb tree right outside the window. We plan to paint this room a smokey blue.
^Our living room. It's "L" shaped. There's a really comfy chaise lounge in the righthand corner. That's our reading nook. We're going to put up a bookcase by the chaise. We got a great deal and very nice, comfortable couches!! Cool lights, huh? Since we have such nice high ceilings, we thought the pendant lighting would be cool. We plan to paint the living room a smokey green.
^Here's our kitchen! It's nice!! Our house used to be a tax office, so no one has actually lived here in awhile. The appliances haven't been used very much. It's square shaped - the counter space you see, is all we've got. We plan to get an island or side table to put on the far left (outside of the camera's view) for storage and workspace. The mirrored cabinet is a really nice pantry area.

^I haven't taken a good picture of my room yet, but you can see it has a high slanted ceiling with exposed wooden beams. I really like the light fixtures I picked out - I have a super high ceiling, so I thought they would look cool hanging down. I'm still working on getting a curtain for my room. From my window, I can see the local church... and hear its bells (from 6AM to 10PM). So far, I still like it. It's feels so European to wake up to church bells, the sound of a train running on a nearby track, and see a castle everyday.
