Our Vacuum Pot Coffee Maker!

Heather and I are sort of coffee fanatics. I've got a few students who regularly make sarcastic comments about how much I like coffee, and I always reply - "how else will my headache go away!" : )

This past weekend we went to a local flea market and we found a new coffee making contraption. I've started collecting unique coffee grinders at the markets, so I usually stop by stands that have coffee stuff. Thankfully, the vendor spoke a little English and she explained how this thing worked. I asked her how much and she said 15 euro. Heather I bought it. When we got home, I looked them up online and learned that they are called vacuum pots ... and discovered that we got a great deal on it. The cheapest one I found was $80, and they went up from there. Score!

So this morning we tried it out ... after googling all the ins and outs to learn how to do it right.

First, you warm up water in the lower compartment and add grounds to the top.
Then you wait for the water to boil, and eventually the water gets sucked up, and the coffee grounds sit in the water.
The coffee brews in the upper compartment for a while, and eventually it starts flowing back down in the lower container. You have to stir the top part so the grounds don't clog the filter.
Then, wa-la! Coffee is ready. The process is sort of a mix between a French Press and Moka Pot (stovetop espresso maker).
